Collaborative Commissions

Benji Reid has received a number of collaborative commissions including:

•    Dramaturge and Director for Life of a B-boy with Spearfish and Funkstylerz UK.
Spearfish design inspirational events and workshops that empower people to actively engage in and experience new facets of urban culture through art, music, dance, sport, fashion and film.
Funkstylerz UK is a performing dance company that incorporates the original streetdances of breaking, popping and locking. This cutting edge company was formed to create a strong unit of the very best dancers who have each individually gained respect and recognition in the world of streetdance.

•    Dramaturge for Nzi Dada.
Nzi Dada was formed by the collaboration between Jim Parris and Xumo Nounjio.  Their work aims to reflect a joint interest in ancient African tradition whilst at the same time being fashioned by the practices of modern creativity.  By combining music, performance, sculpture and video, Nzi Dada explores the traditional African context and multiplicity of art forms and appropriates it as part of contemporary practice.

•    Dramaturge for Soular Power'd, an evening-length and multi-layered performance work combining break-dance, graffiti/visual art, DJing, spoken word/poetry, beat box and rap music by Full Circle productions at the New World Theatre, New York.
Full Circle Productions, established by B Boy Kwikstep and Bgirl Rokafella proudly references its roots and style to street performing in NYC. Their mission is to celebrate 360 degrees of NYC hip-hop culture.

•    Co-director with Michael Field of Hip Hop Commedia play at the New York Theatre Workshop for Playback Theater.
Playback Theater (NYC) uses music, dance, FreeStyle Hip Hop and improvisational theatre to transform the stories of the audience into the art of theatre. Rooted in ancient story telling traditions and tempered by current poetic and musical forms, Playback Theater takes the script from their audiences; memories, feelings, dreams, social and political conflicts are all transformed into theater by their actors and musicians.

•    Choreographed Seven, a hip hop adaptation of the Greek classic "Seven Against Thebes", directed by Steven Sapp written by Will Power, with the University of Iowa.

•    Choreographed and co-directed Slamdunk, a new hip-hop musical about brotherhood beats and basket ball, with Felix Cross, Artistic Director of NITRO.
NITRO is the UK's premier black theatre company.  Since its inception, the company has produced over forty shows with a strong commitment to encourage, commission, devise and produce new writing by black British artists. In 1999 the company changed its name in Nitro starting a new phase in its exploration of contemporary black British musical theatre.

•    Dramaturge for Marcus Hercules - A Different Perspective
A Different Perspective is a multi media one-man by Marcus Hercules.  This is the story of a beautiful, yet challenging, relationship between a Jamaican father and his son, Wayne, as they
battle to overcome their differences. Wayne with the world at his fingertips is seduced by a life of crime is forced to decide which path to take.

 •    Director and Co-writer for Leo Kay - Mr Sole Abode
Mr Sole Abode is the first production by Leo Kay’s newly established physical performance company madrugada. Inspired by ‘The Famished Road’ by Ben Okri ‘, Waking Life’ by Richard Linklater and writings by David Bohm on Fragmentation, Mr Sole Abode is an enchanting physical performance using text, dance theatre and sound collage to tell the tale of a journey from madness to sanity.
